Telegraaf (news paper)

 | 15 Mar 2006 11:34

Lest I forget: Next Saturday my piccie with the directors (couple?) of ICT-office should be in the Dutch news paper “De Telegraaf”. Didn’t ammount to much really but having my picture taken and Rowdy rubbing his hands while I answered some questions from a reporter did feel nice…

Update #1: Nothing in any paper that I know of yet so am assuming it’ll never show up anywhere.

Update #2: My parents did spot the article somewhere but no piccy of me in there. Oh well…

National Dutch ICT-gala 2006

 | 11:27

Last night’s gala was a nice mixture between social networking and musical surprises. The latter mainly due to the fact that the chosen theme was: “nieuwe en bijzondere combinaties” which kind of translates to: “new and unusual/special combinations”.

Quagga: isisd

 | 13 Mar 2006 14:21

Sadly isisd is still in it’s infancy. Seems that the database is built but the routing table is only populated with what is in the neighbour’s routing table… Support I’ll have to route statically for now. If anyone has some good quagge isisd information sources please let me know.

ICT-gala 2006

 | 24 Feb 2006 11:23

ICT-gala 2006If anyone knows what the Dutch ICT-gala entails then drop me a mail…

Easynet has given me tickets for this gala evening on the 14th of March, it’s organised by ICT-office which seems to be a lobby organisation. ‘Young professionals’ will be able to do some networking and key business people will be present. Not sure if it comes down to big shots looking for potential employees or not. Suppose I’ll just have to wait and see what the evening will bring.

I do know that I’ll have to rent a tux and Hayley will have to rent a gala dress. Oh how annoying these perks are…

Unused protocol features (ip options)

 | 18 Feb 2006 21:34

Anyone ever heard of ‘Strict Source Routing’ or ‘Loose Source Routing’?

Well it’s in IPv4, CLNP and IPv6, but no-one seems to use it. Please leave a comment if you think I’m wrong! It could be ever so usefull for network monitoring and reporting if one could specify the route a packet should take. One could test, monitor or report on links / paths which one can’t do now due to SFP (Shortest Path First) routing, if only… Sigh

200 bald men fighting over 6 combs

 | 17 Feb 2006 17:11

I’m glad Radia Perlman manages to scatter some funny anecdotes into her book “Interconnections”, this one is about the 6 TOS bits in the IP header (page 244):

Some people have affectionately referred to the -IETF Differentiated Services- working group as “200 bald men fighting over 6 combs”.

It’s funny to see the history as she’s describing the future in her book which shows how fast it’s dated. She wrote “Interconnections” in 2000 but it’s still a great book explaining fundamental issues in a comprehensive manner, my print is a 7th edition from March 2005. Definetely a book to use as network protocol reference due to the many explanations as to why things are the way they are.

Priority

 | 9 Feb 2006 21:10

I have decided to add a new category: “Networking quotes”. Here’s the first one, ‘Interconnections, 2nd edition’ page 181:

Priority is an attempt to implement the principles of jealousy and envy in computer networks.

Personal headers

 | 21 Jan 2006 21:04

Finally got round to sorting out my own site header images, was getting tired of seeing vSlider up there. So I used the piccies I recently shot of the 2 Cisco ISR routers I received for the TestLAB and gave The Gimp another spin. Wow either I’m getting smarter or The Gimp is getting easier, most likely the latter…

Sodding books

 | 10 Jan 2006 22:34

Found out today that Comcol.nl can’t deliver the last book I need either! Checked Ciscopress to no avail, they do list the book and it’s price but state:

This publication currently is not for sale

Right back to Amazon Marketplace then. Ordered it there this afternoon so will have to wait for it to arrive, which will probably in about 4 to 6 weeks time sigh. Still waiting for one of the books I ordered through Marketplace on the 13th of Dec. The other book I ordered there, different company/person, was waiting for me on my doormat when I can home from X-mas in the UK.

Update: Joy, oh what joy! Got an email back from the ppl I ordered the book from through Amazon Marketplace. They’re sorry but have run out of the book, they’ll remove the listing on Amazon (which apparently will take 2 to 3 weeks). Good thing is they’ll credit my creditcard.

Thanks to my father-in-law for the tip: Barnes&Noble.com provided usefull eventhough their shiping & handling is extortionate. So get it from B&N if you need this book, no complaints at all…

Easynet bought by Sky

 | 6 Jan 2006 14:45

It’s finally official: BSkyB has bought Easynet: press release. [press release was removed, Can not be bothered to find an archived version]

Toys! (2851 & 877)

 | 5 Jan 2006 22:03

Extra power sockets...Yeeha, the first Cisco ISR routers have come in. I’ve now got a 2851 with HWIC-4ESW and a 877 to test. Let’s see how well these will do in my QoS tests…

The 1803 has arrived as well and a 878 has been ordered to test SDSL as well as ADSL (877).

More books

 | 30 Dec 2005 15:20

Right I’ve got 8 of the 15 books and I’m hoping DHL will deliver 2 more tomorrow so I can take all books home with me when we go back home on the 2nd of Jan (2006). The book list has been updated with all known ISBN numbers and title corrections, I’m trying to include the volume and edition numbers as it’s hard to tell the books apart when you want to order them.

Amazon told me that a book I ordered directly from them wasn’t available anymore so I’ve just ordered it from Computer Collectief in NL. Their site stated that they’d need to order it and it will be 36 EUR instead of USD but hey at least their cheaper than most and postage was only 2,- so I shouldn’t complain really. Hoping the other 2 books ordered through Amazon’s ‘one-click’ ™ are waiting for me at the post-office or at least haven’t been shipped back yet…

Only the header image now…

 | 24 Dec 2005 20:57

Nearly done, only the header image needs replacing and this site is done… Let me know if things don’t work so I can fix them.

Time for X-mas eve now!
